01 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Investment Approach

Evaluate protection or directional exposure through payoff scenarios, sensitivity to gold prices and volatility, and the cost of time-limited rights. Match the contract size and underlying to any holding being hedged

02 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Key Risk Considerations

A purchased option can lose its entire premium. A seller can incur losses far greater than the premium received. Exercise can create a futures position with additional obligations; time decay, liquidity, and settlement rules require explicit review

03 / PRODUCT GUIDE

The option and its underlying gold instrument

A gold option grants a buyer a specified contractual right linked to an underlying gold instrument. The reference may be a futures contract or another documented price exposure rather than physical gold already owned. The seller accepts the corresponding obligation under the contract

Read the complete instrument description: call or put, strike, expiry, exercise style, multiplier, currency and settlement method. A call and a put on the same gold market are different exposures. Spot gold, futures and options should not be treated as interchangeable holdings

04 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Calls, puts and expiry payoffs

A call gives a right associated with buying the underlying at the strike under the contract; a put gives a right associated with selling. In a simplified cash-settled model, a call’s expiry value per unit is the greater of zero or reference price minus strike. A put’s is the greater of zero or strike minus reference price

These are gross payoffs, not profits. Premium and other costs must be deducted. Before expiry an option can have value even when its immediate exercise value is zero, because time and uncertainty remain. The instrument’s actual exercise and settlement provisions control the real cash flows

05 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Premium, intrinsic value and time value

The option premium is the price for the contractual right. It reflects intrinsic value where present and additional value related to remaining time, expected volatility and other inputs. A buyer can lose the premium even if the gold market moves in the expected direction but not far enough or soon enough

Liquidity and quoted spreads influence the executable premium. Compare the same expiry, strike and contract size rather than comparing premiums alone. A cheaper option may be farther from profitable exercise or closer to expiry, so it does not necessarily represent better value

06 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Sensitivity to price, volatility and time

Delta summarizes local sensitivity to an underlying price change; gamma describes how that sensitivity changes. Vega concerns changes in implied volatility, while theta concerns the passage of time under the model. These are approximations for analyzing a changing position, not guaranteed cash flows

A purchased option can fall in value when implied volatility declines even if gold moves favorably. Sensitivities evolve with price and time, so a position should be reassessed rather than evaluated only using the conditions at purchase. Model assumptions and market depth affect the quality of the estimates

Buying, selling, exercise and assignment

An option can generally be closed by an offsetting transaction where liquidity and venue rules allow. Exercise style determines whether exercise is permitted before expiry or only at a defined time. Automatic exercise procedures and decision cutoffs must be checked before the final trading day

For an option on futures, exercise can create a futures position, introducing further margin and settlement obligations. The option buyer’s premium exposure before exercise should not be confused with the obligations of that resulting position. A seller can face assignment and losses substantially greater than the collected premium

Worked call profit and loss

For a simplified cash-settled call, assume a $2,400 strike, an $80 premium per reference unit and a 100-unit multiplier. The premium outlay is $8,000. At a $2,550 expiry reference price the gross payoff is $15,000, leaving $7,000 profit before fees. The simplified expiry break-even price is $2,480 before costs

At $2,450, the payoff is $5,000 and the loss is $3,000. At or below $2,400 the payoff is zero and the full $8,000 premium is lost. This is a hypothetical cash-settled model, not a claim about a specific listed gold option’s settlement rules

09 / PRODUCT GUIDE

Protection, directional positions and spreads

A put can be studied as protection for a defined gold exposure, but strike, expiry, multiplier and basis must match the holding appropriately. The premium is a cost for a limited-term right; an expired hedge no longer protects the position

Combining purchased and sold options can define a spread with a different payoff and cost. A lower net premium can also limit gains or add exercise and assignment complexity. Review all legs together, including whether an early exercise or illiquid market leaves an unmatched position

Fees, margin and portfolio cash needs

Costs can include premium, trading commission, exchange charges, bid–ask spread and exercise-related charges. Margin requirements apply according to the position and venue rules, especially for sold options and resulting futures. Premium payment timing can differ by product design

Plan for expiry and any new position created by exercise. Compare cash required under adverse conditions rather than treating the initial net premium as the only possible cash need. Physical holdings, futures and options also involve different custody, financing and delivery considerations

Principal risks and review questions

Risks include premium loss, time decay, volatility changes, illiquidity, assignment and settlement misunderstandings. Gold itself can fall sharply; an option does not make its direction predictable. A naked short call can carry theoretically unlimited loss in a simplified uncapped price model

Before trading, identify the maximum loss where it is contractually bounded, the expiry actions required, and the conditions that can create additional obligations. Record how the position behaves at several prices and volatility levels, and check whether all intended exit orders can actually execute

Frequently asked questions

Does a gold option mean I own gold?

No. It gives a contract right linked to the specified underlying

Can the buyer lose the whole premium?

Yes. A standalone purchased option can expire without value

Is the seller’s risk limited to the premium?

No. Obligations can produce much larger losses

Can I profit if gold rises?

A call’s result also depends on premium, time, volatility and the size of the rise

Can exercise create another position?

Yes. An option on futures can create a futures position, with separate obligations
